Technical Writer

Job Description:
Electronic Payments, a fast-paced, expanding fintech company, seeks an experienced Technical Writer for the documentation needs of our restaurant and retail Point of Sale ecosystem. Work with a team of product managers and subject matter experts (SMEs) to produce external and internal documentation that contributes to our products’ overall success and ease of use. Write easy-to-understand content that effectively explains tasks, workflows, and product features in a succinct, friendly manner. Experience creating supporting technical learning/demo videos is a major plus.

Documentation Responsibilities:

  • Oversee documentation for suite of proprietary restaurant and retail point of sale solutions, including Exatouch Point of Sale, DeliverMe online ordering, eGiftSolutions gift card platform, TableTurn restaurant management, and others.
  • Dive deep into product functionality, working with test machines and test data to learn about and understand existing and new features
  • Gather, analyze, and translate technical information from SMEs to compose clear, comprehensive documentation for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Write and maintain topic-based and context-sensitive information in the existing online product knowledge base, using our established writing style and standards for external audiences
  • Explain product functionality in clear, task-based articles, creating and incorporating screen captures and other visual cues to improve user understanding and product adoption
  • Regularly review documentation for accuracy, timeliness, and usefulness; update and revise as needed to incorporate changes in functionality or documentation approach

Collaborative Responsibilities:

  • Participate in our Agile development workflow, supporting priorities for several product lines as needed
  • Track product changes and create documentation tasks using project management tools such as Team Foundation Server (TFS), JIRA, or other project management tools
  • Collaborate with SMEs to research and document product information, feature functionality, workflows, and updates
  • Source information from written SME documentation, internal testing, and knowledge shared in team status meetings
  • Report project metrics and impediments to the team, including product owners and scrum master

Infrastructure Support:

  • Incorporate controlled vocabulary, test machine configuration management, and standard naming conventions in test environments
  • Work from and update document templates, examples, style guides, and documentation processes as needed
  • Ensure proper use of technical terminology; apply fundamental technical concepts, processes, practices, and procedures to assignments, as well as feedback from the product team
  • Proofread, revise, and clarify documents written by others
  • Work with the programming, product, and marketing teams to continually improve technical writing standards, processes, and documentation
  • Gather usability feedback from clients, product managers, and staff

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience, such as technical writing, product documentation, or online publishing, including experience with writing customer-facing materials designed for users at varying technical levels
  • Experience with Agile-based software development, TFS, JIRA, or the like
  • Ability and initiative to learn new tools and technologies as required
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex, technical concepts and make them understandable in text and images
  • Ability to think and write rationally in logical, sequential steps
  • Ability to produce and/or understand workaround solutions to problems
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft simple, concise content without extraneous words and unneeded flourishes
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Time management and organization skills
  • Professional approach to deadlines
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience with WordPress
  • Technical video production
  • Experience capturing screen graphics and editing images; experience with Snagit is a plus
  • Working knowledge of screen and audio recording software
  • Willingness to “get under the hood” with our software, maintaining test machines to create realistic scenarios for task-based documentation
