POS Essentials
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this post ran in 2019. We’re publishing this updated version to include the latest point of sale features that are helping small businesses this holiday season.
The holidays can be stressful for retailers with increased customer demands, training new seasonal staff, and the list goes on. We have some pointers that will help you save time, serve more customers, and boost sales! To ensure your store is performing at its peak this holiday season, enjoy these quick tips on how to use your point of sale (POS) to benefit your business.
The great advantage of POS is its ability to accommodate the needs of your business. With quick ring-up features and a row of customizable buttons right on your register screen, Exatouch® POS streamlines transactions, enabling you to get last-minute shoppers in and out quickly. Label one of your buttons as a gift wrapping fee you can quickly add to transactions for those who want to take advantage of the service. Set another button to make gift card sales simple. Gift cards are a smart way to increase sales, reach new customers, and complete fast returns while keeping funds in your store.

Pull inventory reports often to ensure you have enough stock on hand to fulfill customer demand. No one wants to run out of their most popular products in the middle of a seasonal rush because that means losing valuable sales and potentially upsetting customers. Keep an eye on your supply stock, too. Have plenty of receipt paper, gift cards, and employee access cards for the seasonal staff you hire. When the end of the year rolls around, evaluate whether an additional POS station may benefit your sales, staff, and customers for upcoming seasons. Many businesses keep an extra station in back that they set up for the holidays to accommodate higher foot traffic.
Exatouch has built-in sales reports that show you which days of previous holiday seasons had the most sales—and the times in which most of those sales were made. Use that information to staff up when you’re busiest and adjust your holiday store hours to ensure you’re open when customers want to shop!

Exatouch offers the ability to print gift receipts without prices, making customers and their gift recipients happy while streamlining the inevitable exchange process for your staff. You can even include your store’s return policy on the receipt to remain transparent and keep customers informed.
While you have extra hands on deck, be sure to track the productivity of your seasonal staff. With POS data, you can see which team members have the highest sales. Consider offering holiday contests to employees as a fun way to encourage sales and reward top performers with gift cards at the end of the season. If you want to transition some of your seasonal staff to permanent positions in the New Year, employee productivity data can assist with your decision-making process.
By leveraging these POS pointers, your retail store is sure to have its greatest holiday sales yet! Discover more about Exatouch and how it can take your business to a whole new level.
